This is for the birds

There’s something I’ve noticed about this season of my life: the best days aren’t planned.

They don’t show up on an itinerary or a bucket list. They happen when I’m simply out living — running errands, driving back roads, figuring out van life one small task at a time — and I stay open enough to take the unexpected turn.

I was on a simple mission — heading across town to pick up something for the van from Facebook Marketplace. Nothing glamorous. Just everyday life stuff.

But as I was driving through Katikati, a little roadside sign caught my eye: Bird Garden.

The funny part? The day before, I’d done a bird walk on the other side of town. Apparently birds were becoming my theme for the week. It felt like a nudge.

So… you guessed it.

I took a right turn.

Man oh man, I’m glad I did.

I ended up at Katikati Bird Gardens, and what I thought would be a quick stop turned into nearly two and a half hours of wandering. Winding paths, leafy corners, sculptures tucked into the gardens, and birds singing overhead like they were putting on a private concert.

No schedule. No rushing. Just strolling.

Honestly, it was the most fun I’ve had since… well… yesterday — because these days every day feels like a field trip.

Before I left, I had the loveliest chat with the owner, a wonderful Kiwi who took over the property from the original couple who started it back in the 1970s. Hearing the history made the place feel even more special — cared for, loved, and quietly thriving all these years.

Walking back to the van, I realized something.

This is exactly how my life feels now.

Not mapped out. Not perfectly planned. Just one small decision at a time. One curious right turn. One unexpected joy waiting where I least expect it.

And maybe that’s what starting over really is — trusting that the road will surprise you with beauty if you’re brave enough to follow the signs.

Every day really is a field trip.

And I’m so glad I didn’t drive past this one.
